Ibsen's spirit has been present in Serbia and Montenegro from the first half of the last century, but even more in the past few years. Many theatres have staged Ibsen's classic dramas recently. To name a few: The National Theatre in Uzice, as well as the theatre in Vrsac, staged Peer Gynt. Theatres in Subotica and Podgorica staged "A Doll's House" ("Nora"). The National Theatre in Belgrade and the theatre in Pirot staged "Enemy of the people". The moste recent production is the National Theatre in Zrenjanin with the staging of "The Master bulider" which was put on the repertoire last autumn. The Royal Norwegian Embassy has co-supported these projects.

The Institute for Nordic Languages and Literature at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade have also been active in translating Ibsen's dramas. Eight dramas were translated from original language into Serbian for the first time ever. The first volume was published by Geopoetika publishing in 2003. The second volume is to be published soon.
